One Response to The NHS as you know it cannot survive five more years of David Cameron

  1. This may be alarmist or it may be justified – Andy Burnham made a valiant attempt to do so on the Today Programme (Radio 4) this morning despite constant interruptions. (Machine gun interviewing obliterates debate; slow bowling of questions is a far better approach.)

However it is a worry that taps into a lot of longer-term concerns many have about the shape of the country. The Tories seem to be subtly (?) trying to “Americanise” us (see language battles). If they succeed those of us of working age – who are already finding it hard to save – have to accept that we will have to make private provision for:
    – a pension beyond a poverty level state pension
    – health care – particularly if we want it to be both “prompt” and “caring”
    – long-term social care that is better than the old workhouses
I don’t know where most of us will individually find the necessary money in such a scenario – I can see that without some form of communitarian approach to national insurance against these “Giant Evils”, a lot of us face a bleak old age. I risk becoming “economically un-viable” probably in my late 70’s. I am not sure what happens then.

If Margaret Thatcher Cameron wins on Thursday in May, I warn you not to be ordinary, I warn you not to be young, I warn you not to fall ill, I warn you not to be old.
