Mr Amess is training his guns on the wrong target

I was somewhat alarmed by headlines that announced that Southend West’s MP, David Amess, wanted Southend Hospital’s management fired. Alarmed because I have seen little evidence of the Conservative MP supporting his local hospital.

Without doubt there are problems in the NHS, problems created by the Government that Mr Amess is a member of.

Mr Amess’s party have chosen a time of austerity to spend billions on a top-down reorganisation – money that could and should have been spent on patients. His Government has overseen a crisis in A&E, waiting lists for treatment are growing again, it is harder to get see your family doctor, and treatments like cataract and knee operations are being rationed.

Whilst management must be accountable, and should not be immune from criticism, I would have hoped that a local MP would have stood up for a vital local service like Southend Hospital, especially as its woes can be laid at the door of the Government that Mr Amess is a member of. After all Mr Amess backed the Government’s reforms to the NHS that have seen thousands of nurses and frontline staff lost across the country.

Mr Amess has set up the hospital to fail, and then criticised it when it happened.

It’s not the hospital management that David Amess should be taking to task, it is his Government and their appalling record on the NHS.
