Cllr Julian Ware-Lane and Reg Copley deliver a birthday cake to Suzannah Scott, Library Manager at Kent Elms Library

Last Friday I was delighted to have been invited by former Southend-on-Sea mayor Reg Copley to help deliver a fiftieth birthday cake to Kent Elms library. The library was officially opened on the 13th of July, 1964, and Reg, a newly elected councillor in those days, attended the opening ceremony.

Reg Copley informed me that The Kent Elms Branch Library Celebration Cake depicts an open library book “… just as Kent Elms must remain an open library”.

I have campaigned for Kents Elms library to survive in an age of cuts, just as I have campaigned for all libraries. Every single one should stay open.

Reg adds: “I now feel it is again a privilege to Kent Elm’s Fiftieth Birthday to pay tribute to those local residents who campaigned tirelessly for Eastwood to have its own Branch Library … and the fight continue to keep Kent Elms Branch Library open to effectively serve the community and local schools … in personal and library terns that is fact and not fiction!
