Huhne – the first law of holes should have been used

You have to be really impressed by some people’s stupidity. Chris Huhne will not be the first person who, on facing a driving ban, finds an accommodating person to swallow the points. This is stupid enough. What elevated it to impressive proportions were his consistent denials once it was obvious he had been caught out. If he had admitted his error of judgement early on then I reckon he would still have a career in politics. As it is, his persistent lying has made his exit from national politics inevitable.
As with so many of these types of things it is rarely the first offence that drags them down, it is the denials, the evasions, the refusal to properly apologise until cornered, that wreak the irreparable damage. Voters know that politicians have feet of clay. The occasional lapse or mistake, while rightly brought to task, will rarely cause lasting damage. Some might argue that it is the mistakes that make us what we are. But, having done something stupid there is only one sensible course of action – admit, apologise, do penance.
The first law of holes always applies.
Del Thomas is an aspiring councillor who has uttered something stupid (Tory Compares Gay People To Paedophiles). He has issued a half-hearted apology (I caused offence with my last tweet and im sorry. I wasnt comparing gays 2 paedophiles and was just saying the argument could justify any) but he really needs to do better than this.
I like Del, and he certainly had a future in local politics. If he wants my advice he must make a proper apology, not some mealy-mouthed half-hearted excuse for one – I will be monitoring his blog for the next few days.
Julian, for what is worth, and I will happily tell Del when I next see him as I do not believe in mincing my words, I think the post was inappropriate not because I support gay marriage and he doesn’t but because it is careless to say the least to put homosexuality and paedophilla in the same sentence.
As you are in the mood for calling for proper apologies, I presume that you will also be pushing for your Group Leader to issue a full apology for refering to all Conservatives as vermin rather than his half baked one after the story made the Echo last year.
For avoidance of doubt the ‘apology’ can be found here http://victoriavoice.wordpress.com/2012/02/27/to-blog-or-not-to-blog/.
At least Del did say the very difficult five letter word for some – sorry!
I thought Ian’s comments clarified exactly what he meant to say. If you think he fell short then surely you should address your comments to him.
For the record some of my best friends are life-long Tories. We have tremendous dinner table conversations and I enjoy their company immensely. Tories are not vermin, just misguided!
I remember some years ago a highly educated scrubber fermented a riot against a pediatrician, not knowing the difference. These remarks can be incredibly harmful. Live and let live is not on the present Tory agaeda.
Colin, it will be interesting to see how the vote on this issue goes at 19:00 especially as I believe a number of Labour MP’s, according to LabourList, are also preparing to vote against gay marriage but strangely little has been said on this.
But as the State rightly seeks inclusivity the Church will surely follow if such is successful – as it has in the past.
But why can’t it lead?
