“The days of providing universal provision are gone”

“The days of providing universal provision are gone” – Cllr Tony Cox’s (Conservative, West Shoebury) words, not mine, uttered last night.

Not quite true, but it certainly looks like the direction we are heading in.

It is depressing that such words can be uttered with no apology, no vow to fight to stop this, no promise to return to a civilised treatment of the dispossessed. Gone, gone, gone.

Well, this somewhat amateur politician is not going to see universal provision sink beneath the waves of austerity without some attempt to launch the lifeboat to rescue them.
