Where is the politics?

Two In Touch leaflets in one day! This one delivered by my councillor (or his team). We now know the identity of the major candidates this May in Blenheim Park ward. Julie Cushion has been selected by the blues, and she will face Tony Borton in the red corner, and Graham Longley from the yellows.

The picture of Julie on this leaflet is awful. Now I realise my eyesight is gradually weakening with my advancing years, but you could not recognise Ms Cushion from this.

I am sure the photos at the top of this leaflet mean something, but this escapes me. I presume they are meant to represent the ward, I recognise none of them. I know James Courtenay occasionally reads this blog; I invite him to let me know what they are about.

One thing is obvious from all the literature about my home ward – its name is clumsy. ‘Blenheim Park’ would be much better shortened to just ‘Blenheim’.

James has promised to keep in regular contact with Blenheim Park’s residents. I had rather hoped that something better than this lightweight affair would been the result. It is mostly filler and offers nothing of James’ views on the big issues. In fact, it is devoid of anything that can be described as political. I am involved in politics for more than just fixing potholes and clearing up litter.

  1. I delivered it personally to you Julian.

Regarding the pictures – one of them is me at the CDRP road show meeting and greeting Blenheim Residents, one is at the Southend Carnival, one is with the litter team as mentioned in the article and the final one is inspecting the new road St Laurence Way near the airport – something that several members of the ward have discussed with me.

Perhaps you should start a petition to get the ward’s name changed. Get enough signatures and I’ll present it for you!

I am not involved in politics to pick fights all of the time, but to make a difference to those whom I represent. This is why I have dealt with issues in the ward, not just potholes and litter, but housing issues, protection of people’s property and supporting schools events.

I have recently been involved in deciding where hundreds of thousands of pounds of money goes in the voluntary sector, various planning decisions as well as representing residents on local traffic and parking issues.

I do not feel the need to give a running critic of what Nigel, his cabinet colleagues and the Conservative Administration as a whole are achieving. I am covering issues that residents have raised with me. That being said, the budget will feature in the next newsletter – perhaps with a list of reasons why one should not vote Labour in the next elections… I’m just not sure I have enough space for that one.

  2. I am flattered that you delivered one personally (although I suspect you were actually doing my whole road). Thanks for the clarification on the pictures – I am convinced my eyesight is getting worse!

I think the ward name is silly (as is Eastwood Park’s) but I am not bothered enough to start a petition.

You are certainly making a difference to people’s lives – it is just that your support for Conservatism is making this a negative difference.

You must call by for a cuppa one day.
